Read to Me, Please

One of my favourite quotes is by Emilie Buchwald:

“Children are made readers on the laps of their parents.”

A simple statement that is certain to encourage any parent to take a book from the shelf, cosy up and have an enjoyable read with their child.

The quote inspired my poem,

Read to Me, Please

Mummy, oh Mummy, come and read to me please
Instead of scrubbing the floor on your knees
I love the stories that make us both laugh
Oh please, oh please, stop cleaning the bath
The pictures are all very fine to see
But, in your words, they come alive to me
You talk of so many magical things
Of wizards and spells and dragons with wings
I’m sure there’s no need to wait until bed
Put down the duster, and let’s read instead

Go on, grab a book and read it to the small person in your life. You’re sure to educate, entertain and enthral!

Perhaps the book could be, “Fred Bear – A Very Threadbare Bear.”
